Welcome to the growing community of Gateway users accessing the UK’s only unified platform to discover and access health data sets for research and innovation.
Two years of the Health Data Research Innovation Gateway
Funded by UK Research and Innovation's (UKRI) Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and delivered in partnership with the UK Health Data Research Alliance, the Gateway is the UK’s only unified platform to search, discover and request access to health data sets for research and innovation. At the end of May, we marked two years of the Health Data Research Innovation Gateway.
From enhancing search capabilities to supporting COVID-19 research efforts and, most recently, building a data use register, the Gateway has developed at an incredible pace since its first release in early 2020. To date, over 750 datasets from 60+ data custodians have been made available on the Gateway, and more than 2000 people from across the health data community are registered users.

Theme: Reproducible Data Science
June’s Data Access and Discovery webinar was hosted by Rosie Wakeham, Head of Training at Health Data Research UK. Rosie was joined by Heidi Seibold who spoke about reproducible data analysis and the first steps towards a gold standard.
Watch a recording of the session to find out about Heidi’s brilliant ‘research companion’ concept and her best tips and tools for staying digitally organised when it comes to the reproducibility pipeline.
This month, our Content and Community Lead, Ruth Milne, and our interim Chief Technology Officer, Susheel Varma, are representing the Gateway at two international conferences.
International Workshop on Science Gateways
Ruth is attending IWSG in person from 15-17 June to present: The HDR Innovation Gateway - a platform to discover, request access to health data and demonstrate trustworthiness in research across the United Kingdom and beyond.
International Data Week
Susheel is speaking virtually at IDW on 'Seeing a FOREST through the TREs' as part of the Research Data Alliance Sensitive Data Interest Group. His session is scheduled for 21 June at 02:30 UTC (IDW is a hybrid event taking place in Seoul, Korea and online).

A showcase event for the Digital Innovation Hub Programme
In 2019, Health Data Research UK launched the Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) Programme to establish the UK’s infrastructure for trustworthy data research. Funded by UK Research and Innovation’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, this has delivered impact for industry, the NHS and patients across the UK who are benefiting from medical discoveries and breakthroughs resulting from research using health data.
Our event on 28 June 2022 in Birmingham – Building a Legacy for Health Data Research Infrastructure – will showcase the impact to date of the DIH Programme achieved through the outstanding partnerships of organisations and people across the UK to establish a strong foundation for the future.
Gateway Collections are curated around a particular theme or topic and bring together related resources such as datasets, papers, tools and data uses listed on the Gateway.
Our Health Data Research Hubs are centres of excellence with expertise, tools, knowledge and ways of working to maximise the insights and innovations developed from health data.
